Each time a key is pressed, they are matched against a key that has already been saved. If the key pressed matches the initial password "1234" stored in EEPROM, the lock opens. If the passwords do not match, the LCD will display "Access Denied".
When you press the "#" key, you will be prompted for the current password, and if they match, you will be prompted for a new password and the password will be changed.
